Ultrasound Opportunity Act in Illinois
Illinois State Representative Barbara Wheeler (along with a bi-partisan group of 14 co-sponsors) introduced a new and important bill, HB 2701, which would require abortion providers to offer an opportunity to receive and view and active ultrasound to women considering abortion.
We applaud the strong language that is in the bill including:
“Provides that at any facility where abortions are performed… shall offer any woman seeking an abortion after 8 weeks of gestation an opportunity to receive and view an active ultrasound of her unborn child by someone qualified to perform ultrasounds at the facility… prior to the woman having any part of an abortion performed or induced and prior to the administration of any anesthesia or medication in preparation for the abortion.” (Emphasis added)
Also, “Furthermore, it is critical to the psychological and physical well-being of a woman considering an abortion that she receive complete and accurate information on the reality and status of her pregnancy and of her unborn child.” (Emphasis added)
Finally, “reduce the risk that a woman may elect an abortion, only to discover later, with devastating psychological consequences, that her decision was not fully informed.” (Emphasis added)
We at Mosaic Pregnancy & Health Centers consistently see women choose life for their unborn babies once they view their ultrasounds. Some women cry, others become quiet and reflective; still others exclaim that they cannot go through with an abortion! We are so thankful for the technology and trained sonographers who make all of this possible.
