New Legislation Seeks to Ban Abortion Pill

“I took the abortion pills. It was very traumatic.” Our patient pointed to the fetal development pamphlet depicting a baby in utero. “I saw my baby, and it looked just like that.”

The abortion industry claims that taking abortion pills is no worse than a regular period. But Mosaic Health patients tell a different story: “It was horrible. I would never do it again,” one woman said.

To expose the dangers of abortion pills, Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) introduced new legislation in March 2026 to federally ban the abortion drug mifepristone by revoking FDA approval. He hosted a press conference on March 11, 2026, to announce the new bill and share statistics and stories of abortion pill harm.

“The science is clear: the chemical abortion drug is inherently dangerous to women and prone to abuse,” said Sen. Hawley. “Congress must act now to protect the health and safety of women.”

The Serious Consequences of Abortion Pills

The FDA’s drug label says that mifepristone has adverse effects on less than 0.5% of women. However, a recent study by the Ethics & Public Policy Center found that nearly 11% of women who take the abortion pill experience adverse effects such as infection, hemorrhaging, sepsis, or other serious harm—a rate 22 times higher than the FDA’s claim.

The Charlotte Lozier Institute also reports that 1 in 5 women suffer a complication from abortion pills, which is 4 times higher than the complication rate for a surgical abortion.

One of Mosaic Health’s patients, “Lucy,” experienced this statistic in a frighteningly real way. A few years ago, she took the abortion pill, but she had such serious bleeding that she went to the hospital and required blood transfusions. “It almost killed me,” Lucy said, crying.

Shanyce Thomas, not a patient of Mosaic Health, also suffered serious complications from her chemical abortion. She spoke out at Sen. Hawley’s press conference, sharing how she took mifepristone, but bits of fetal tissue remained inside her uterus and developed into a life-threatening infection. Shanyce required life support, multiple blood transfusions, and a partial hysterectomy to survive.

“I took the abortion pill because I was scared and pressured by my boyfriend to end my child's life. In that process, I almost lost my life as well,” Shanyce said. “This is why I'm here to speak out. The abortion pill kills, and it ends the lives of children in the womb, and can have dangerous, life-altering consequences for the women who take it."

Accessible Abortion Like Never Before

Despite the many risks of abortion pills, the Biden administration removed the requirement for in-person dispensing during the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, anyone can order abortion pills online without being screened for age, medical history, or abuse—and the rate of chemical abortions at home has steadily risen as a result.

A person can even order abortion drugs for someone else. This happened to Rosalie Markezich, whose boyfriend ordered abortion pills online and forced her to take the pills.

Rosalie shared her story during Sen. Hawley’s press conference: "Those drugs took my child's life. I had already loved my baby, and I did not want an abortion. I told my then-boyfriend that repeatedly, but that did not stop him from ordering FDA-approved drugs without my consent.”

Real Women, Real Stories

In every appointment with a patient considering abortion, Mosaic Health staff share scientifically based facts with her about the dangers and risks of abortion, because she may not hear them anywhere else. Often, our patient responds with her own experience with the abortion pill—her trauma, pain, and mental health struggles after the abortion. Over and over, we hear sentences like:

“They said it wouldn’t be that bad, but it was awful.”

“I spent years recovering emotionally.”

“I never want to go through that again.”

Real women. Real stories. Real facts. All highlighting this truth: abortion pills cause irreversible damage.

Please pray with us that this legislation succeeds in banning mifepristone federally and raises awareness about the documented harm of abortion pills.
